Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
318 AM PDT Thu May 16 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Dry today with temperatures around 5 degrees warmer
than Wednesday, as most locations see highs reaching into the 70s
to low 80s. Dry again on Friday with slightly cooler temperatures
and some breezy westerly winds in the afternoon and early evening.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Friday night. The dry northwesterly
flow aloft continues over NV today with temperatures trending
around 5 degrees warmer than yesterday, with most valley locations
in the 70s to low 80s this afternoon. Low temperatures tonight
into Friday morning will also be warmer, with mid 40s to low 50s.
A dry cold front coming out of the Pacific Northwest early on
Friday will pass SE across NV Friday morning and afternoon, which
will help to cool temperatures down by around 5 degrees. There
will be some weak instability across the southern most portions of
the CWA Friday afternoon, including southern White Pine county
and northeastern Nye county where cumulus clouds are expected to
build, though not expecting any showers or thunderstorms to
develop. Dry conditions continue across the CWA through Friday
night.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Wednesday.

Upper pattern remains active thru the long term period as a
series of shortwaves move thru the PacNW from the northwest and
impact Nevada. Low probabilities for precipitation, 10 to 25
percent, during the afternoons for various portions of the
forecast area. Better push from the northwest mid week with a deep
closed low likely moving thru the PacNW, though timing of this
event currently various between numerical solutions. Otherwise
continued afternoon northwesterly breezes will be present with
gusts 20 to 30 mph. Daytime high temperatures will be mostly in
the 70s with low 80s across portions of central Nevada Saturday
while overnight lows reside mostly in the upper 30s to upper 40s.
Cooler temperatures in place early next week with daytime highs in
the mid 60s to mid 70s and overnight lows in the low 30s to low
40s.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected for the next 24 hours.
Light west winds (less than 10 knots) will develop during the day
on Thursday across northern Nevada with even lighter northwest
winds at KTPH and KELY under mostly clear skies.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...Above normal temperatures will enhance melting of
the remaining high mountain snowpack over the next several days,
with increased flows expected on several area creeks and rivers.

The Bruneau River, Owyhee River at Mountain City, and Jarbidge
River near Jarbidge are currently in action stage, and are
expected to slowly rise with the continued above normal
temperatures for the next few days.

The Humboldt River at Comus has fallen below action stage.
