...A WARM AND RAINY SUMMER FOR SOUTH BEND...
UNLIKE PREVIOUS YEARS, THERE WERE NO MAJOR EARLY AND LATE SEASON
HEATWAVES THIS SUMMER. DESPITE A SERIES OF UPPER LEVEL RIDGES
THROUGHOUT THE SUMEMR MONTHS, HEAT GRADUALLY BUILT THROUGHOUT THE
JUNE AND A MAJORITY OF AUGUST WAS RELATIVELY MILD AS WELL. THE PEAK
HEAT OF THE SUMMER OCCURRED FROM LATE JUNE THROUGH MID JULY, WITH
CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF HIGHS IN THE LOW TO MID 90S AND OPPRESSIVE
HUMIDITY. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE OF THE SUMMER WAS 94 DEGREES,
WHICH OCCURRED ON JULY 1ST. THE COOLEST TEMPERATURE WAS 48 DEGREES,
WHICH OCCURRED ON JUNE 3RD. THERE WERE 9 DAYS WITH TEMPERATURES IN
THE 90S THIS SUMMER, WHICH IS BELOW THE TYPICAL AVERAGE OF 14 DAYS.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2019 THAT THE NUMBER OF 90 DEGREE DAYS
IN THE SUMMER HAS BEEN BELOW NORMAL. DESPITE THE LACK OF VERY HOT
DAYS, THE SUMMER WAS MILD OVERALL. SOUTH BEND HAD AN AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 71.9 DEGREES THIS SUMMER, WHICH IS 1.3 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL AND RANKS AS THE 47TH WARMEST SUMMER ON RECORD.
RAIN WAS EASIER TO COME BY THIS SUMMER COMPARED TO LAST YEAR,
HOWEVER, RAINFALL AMOUNTS MONTH TO MONTH WERE HIGHLY VARIABLE. MUCH
OF THE APPRECIABLE RAINFALL THIS SUMMER WAS FOUND IN DAILY POP-UP
SHOWERS AND STORMS DURING NORTHWEST FLOW AND A PERSISTENT UPPER
LEVEL RIDGE PATTERN THAT WAS PRESENT THROUGHOUT MUCH OF THE SUMMER.
MUCH OF THE APPRECIABLE RAINFALL THIS SUMMER WAS FOUND IN DAILY POP-
UP SHOWERS AND STORMS DURING NORTHWEST FLOW AND A PERSISTENT UPPER
LEVEL RIDGE PATTERN THAT WAS PRESENT THROUGHOUT MUCH OF THE SUMMER.
JUNE AND AUGUST BOTH HAD ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL, WITH 10.06" AND
4.11" RESPECTIVELY. RAINFALL WAS HARDER TO COME BY IN THE JULY
DURING THE PEAK HEAT OF THE SEASON, WITH JULY ENDING UP DRIER THAN
NORMAL WITH ONLY 1.89". OVERALL, THIS WAS THE FIRST WETTER THAN
NORMAL SUMMER IN SOUTH BEND SINCE 2021. 16.06" FELL IN TOTAL, WHICH
IS 4.23" ABOVE NORMAL AND RANKS AS THE 9TH WETTEST SUMMER ON RECORD.

JUNE 2026 WAS BOOKENDED BY WARM SPELLS AND FEATURED NUMEROUS ROUNDS
OF RAIN AND THUNDERSTORMS AS EVIDENCED BY A SECOND GREATEST JUNE
TOTAL RAINFALL ON RECORD: 10.06 INCHES (OVERALL JUNE RECORD IS 10.86
IN 1993). THIS IS VERY IMPRESSIVE, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THAT THE
RAINFALL THIS MONTH WAS FROM VERY HEAVY RAINFALL PRODUCING
THUNDERSTORMS RATHER THAN TROPICAL REMNANTS. THERE WERE FOUR DAYS
THIS MONTH WITH RAINFALL AMOUNTS IN EXCESS OF 1": JUNE 9 (1.36"),
JUNE 11 (1.48"), JUNE 17 (1.52"), AND JUNE 21 (1.75"). EPISODES OF
URBAN FLOODING WERE NOTED IN SOUTH BEND THROUGHOUT JUNE, WITH FLOOD
ADVISORIES ISSUED ON JUNE 11, 17 AND 22. OTHERWISE, AREA WATERWAYS
HANDLED THIS SURPLUS OF RAIN RATHER WELL AS RIVERS ROSE INTO ACTION
STAGE BUT REMAINED BELOW MINOR FLOOD STAGE THIS MONTH. THIS COULD BE
ATTRIBUTED TO MAY`S RAINFALL BEING 2.50 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. A
SECOND FACTOR COULD BE THE SPREAD OUT NATURE OF THE RAIN; MEASURABLE
RAINFALL OCCURRED ON 13 DAYS THIS MONTH. ONE DAILY RAINFALL RECORD
WAS SET: 1.75" ON THE 21ST EXCEEDED 1.70 SET IN 2020. (JUNE 17
MISSED THE RECORD OF 1.58" SET IN 2014 BY 0.02"). SOUTH BEND`S
ANNUAL PRECIPITATION TOTAL TO DATE IS 26.86 INCHES (NINE DAYS OF
MISSING DATA, HOWEVER) WHICH RANKS AS THE 5TH WETTEST, AND IS THE
WETTEST SINCE 27.28 IN 2018.
TO FURTHER PUT INTO CONTEXT HOW IMPRESSIVE 10"+ OF RAINFALL IS IN
JUST ONE MONTH, THE 10.06" THAT FELL IN JUNE 2026 RANKS AS THE 4TH
WETTEST MONTH EVER IN SOUTH BEND`S 133 YEARS OF WEATHER RECORDS! THE
ONLY TIMES THERE WERE HIGHER MONTHLY RAINFALL AMOUNTS WERE IN
SEPTEMBER 2008 (13.92"), AUGUST 2016 (12.81"), AND JUNE 1993
(10.86").
THE MONTH BEGAN WITH DAILY TEMPERATURES JUST A FEW DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL, BUT THEN TRENDED WELL-ABOVE NORMAL BY JUNE 8-10 WHEN HIGHS
WERE WELL INTO THE 80S AND WE RECORDED OUR FIRST 90-DEGREE DAY OF
THE YEAR ON THE 10TH. REFRESHINGLY COOLER FROM THE 14TH THROUGH
27TH. THERE WERE TWO DAYS IN THAT SPAN WITH HIGHS ONLY IN THE 60S.
THE END OF JUNE FEATURED AN EXTREME HEAT WARNING WHERE HIGHS SURGED
INTO THE LOW TO MID 90S FOR SEVERAL DAYS. A NEW RECORD WARM LOW WAS
SET ON JUNE 30TH; 76 DEGREES AT SOUTH BEND TIED THE DAILY RECORD SET
BACK IN 1970. WITH THE TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATIONS IN JUNE, THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 69.1 DEGREES, WHICH IS 0.3 DEGREES
ABOVE NORMAL.
SEVERE WEATHER ON JUNE 11TH WAS NOTABLE AS 14 TORNADOES WERE
SURVEYED ACROSS OUR 37-COUNTY FORECAST AREA. THIS APPEARS TO BE THE
GREATEST SINGLE-DAY OUTBREAKS WITHIN OUR FORECAST AREA SINCE AUGUST
24, 2016 WHICH ALSO HAD 14 TORNADOES. VISIT WEATHER.GOV/IWX/EVENTS

...A HOT AND DRY JULY...
SOUTH BEND STARTED JULY HOT AND HUMID WITH A TYPICAL SUMMERTIME
HEATWAVE, INCLUDING SEVERAL DAYS WITH HIGHS IN THE UPPER 80S TO MID
90S. OVERALL, THE FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH WAS HOT WITH 18 STRAIGHT
DAYS OF ABOVE NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURES. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A
LEAN TOWARDS NEAR TO SLIGHTLY NELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES TO FINISH
OUT THE MONTH. THERE WERE 6 DAYS IN JULY WITH HIGHS IN THE 90S,
WHICH EXCEEDS THE MONTHLY AVERAGE OF 4. OVERALL, JULY AVERAGED 74.8
DEGREES, WHICH IS 2.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND TIES FOR THE 30TH
WARMEST JULY FOR THE PERIOD OF RECORD.
PRECIPITATION-WISE, JULY BROUGHT 2 DAYS OF GREATER THAN 0.5 INCH OF
RAIN: JULY 4TH (0.63") AND 27TH (0.75"). HOWEVER, RAINFALL WAS HARD
TO COME BY OUTSIDE OF SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS THROUGHOUT THE
MONTH. THERE WERE ONLY 8 DAYS WITH MEASURABLE RAINFALL IN JULY. THIS
LED TO SOUTH BEND ONLY GETTING ABOUT 50% OF THEIR NORMAL RAINFALL
FOR THE MONTH. OVERALL, 1.89" OF RAIN FELL, WHICH IS 1.89" BELOW
NORMAL AND RANKS AS THE 27TH DRIEST JULY ON RECORD. THIS WAS THE
DRIEST JULY SINCE 2014. THERE WERE 2 DAYS OF MISSING PRECIPITATION
REPORTS THIS MONTH ON JULY 3RD AND JULY 9TH.
OVERALL, JULY WAS A RELATIVELY QUIET MONTH SEVERE WEATHER-WISE WITH
2 DAMAGING WIND EVENTS ACROSS OUR FORECAST AREA ON JULY 3RD AND JULY
27TH. A TORNADO WAS SURVEYED ON THE 27TH IN GRANT COUNTY, IN. VISIT
WEATHER.GOV/IWX/EVENTS TO READ MORE ABOUT PAST SEVERE WEATHER EVENTS.
JULY HAD 2 DAILY RECORD WARM LOWS SET AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH.
ON JULY 1ST, A LOW OF 77 DEGREES BROKE THE OLD RECORD WARM LOW OF 74
FROM 1931. ON JULY 2ND, A LOW OF 76 DEGREES BROKE THE OLD RECORD
WARM LOW OF 76 FROM 1898.
...A SEASONABLE AUGUST WITH SLIGHT ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL...
OVERALL, AUGUST WAS A SEASONABLE MONTH WITH A MAJORITY OF DAYS
HAVING NEAR NORMAL TO SLIGHTLY WARMER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND
LOW (OR AT LEAST TOLERABLE) HUMIDITY IN SOUTH BEND. THE WARMEST
TEMPERATURE THIS MONTH WAS 88 DEGREES ON AUGUST 8TH AND THE COOLEST
WAS A LOW OF 51 DEGREES ON AUGUST 25TH. ALTHOUGH THERE WERE
OCCASIONAL BOUTS OF WARMTH AND HUMIDITY, THERE WERE NO 90 DEGREE
DAYS THIS MONTH! THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THERE HAVE BEEN ZERO 90+
DEGREE DAYS IN AUGUST SINCE 2019; SOUTH BEND TYPICALLY AVERAGES IS 4
DAYS IN THE 90S EACH AUGUST. OVERALL, SOUTH BEND`S AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE THIS AUGUST WAS 71.7 DEGREES, WHICH IS 1.0 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL.
PERSISTENT NORTHWEST FLOW AND THE "RING OF FIRE" PATTERN BROUGHT
WELL ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL TO NORTHERN AND CENTRAL INDIANA DURING
EARLY TO MID AUGUST. HISTORIC RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 12"+ AND
WIDESPREAD AREAL/RIVER FLOODING WERE OBSERVED SOUTH OF THE US 30
CORRIDOR. UNFORTUNATELY FOR SOUTH BEND, MUCH OF THIS SETUP MISSED
THE AREA COMPLETELY. A MAJORITY OF FAR SOUTHERN LOWER MICHIGAN AND
FAR NORTHERN INDIANA RECIEVED ANYWHERE FROM 50-100% OF THEIR NORMAL
RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH (COMPARED TO 200-300%+ IN CENTRAL INDIANA).
FOR SOUTH BEND, THERE WERE 2 DAYS THIS AUGUST WITH OVER AN INCH OF
RAIN: AUGUST 9TH (1.12") AND AUGUST 11TH (1.10"). OUTSIDE OF THESE 2
DAYS, A MAJORITY OF THE MONTH`S RAINFALL ADDED UP SLOWLY. SOUTH BEND
TOTALED 4.11" OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH IS 0.10" ABOVE NORMAL AND
RANKS AS THE 43RD WETTEST AUGUST. NOTABLY, THIS IS ONLY THE THIRD
TIME IN THE PAST DECADE SOUTH BEND HAS HAD ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL IN
AUGUST AND THE FIRST SINCE 2020.
THERE WERE NO TEMPERATURE OR PRECIPITATION RECORDS SET THIS MONTH.
