Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
133 PM SST Wed Apr 2 2025

.Short term...
Latest satellite data shows thunderstorms over the American
Samoa region, tracking south. Expect the chance for showers to
diminish throughout the day. However, unstable weather observed via
upper air sounding could still lead to further thunderstorms. For
this reason, thunderstorms will remain in the forecast for
tonight. By Thursday, instability will gradually diminish,
reducing the potential for thunderstorm development. However, as
the thunderstorms weaken, a trough to the south will move toward
the territory. Expect an uptick in showers Thursday night through
Friday as the trough moves directly over the Islands. The
potential for flooding remains minimal, as models suggests active
weather will stay at the surface, limiting deep convection.

.Long term...
The aforementioned trough will dissipate by Saturday. Expect light
and variable winds as well as scattered showers to persist through
Sunday. By Monday, east winds will build to 10 to 20 mph,
signaling the start of trade wind season. These winds, along with
showers embedded within the trade wind flow, will continue
through the end of the forecast period.

.Marine...
Calm seas continue for coastal waters due to light and variable
winds, with smooth sailing conditions reflected in current
PacIOOS buoys readings, showing wave heights of 4 to 6 feet.
However, seas are forecast to gradually increase tonight through
Friday as a south swell moves in the area. While the swells pass
through, waves are not expected to exceed 6 feet. The main impacts
from these swells will be strong rip currents and hazardous
surfs. Open waters are expected to remain calm through the
weekend. By Monday, as the winds build from the east, rough ocean
conditions are expected to persist.
