Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS

.Short term...

A ridge of high pressure from the southeast remained over the
American Samoa islands throughout the morning and early afternoon
hours. As the ridge continues to weaken, the easterly trade winds
have also weakened. However, more sun than clouds have been
observed throughout the day today.

We are monitoring a trough from the west than is expected to
approach the territory late tomorrow and Saturday. Easterly winds
are to become northeasterly throughout the day on Friday and
weaken to around 10 mph. Even though stronger wind convergence,
which leads to showers likely, will be to the south, additional
moisture is forecast to advect into the lower levels of the
atmosphere on Friday night through Saturday. This will lead to an
increased chance of passing showers during that time, but rain is
not expected to be heavy enough to cause flash flooding.
Otherwise, more clouds than sun are anticipated throughout the day
on Saturday with light winds on Friday night through Saturday
night.

.Long term...

Another ridge of high pressure is expected to move over the region
from the second half of the weekend and into the middle of next
week. This would produce similar conditions to what is currently
over the American Samoa islands from earlier this week with more
sun than clouds during the day, east/southeasterly trades up to 20
mph, and an isolated to scattered chance (20 to 30% chance) of
passing showers. Therefore, no severe weather is anticipated
during this time.

.Marine...

With easterly winds continuing to decrease from moderate to a
gentle to moderate breeze, wind driven seas continue to ease.
Also, south/southwesterly swell period timing continued to
decrease this afternoon. Therefore, the Small Craft Advisory has
been canceled. Benign conditions are forecast through at least
Sunday morning with variable winds. By Monday, another ridge is
anticipated to move into the region to increase east/southeasterly
trades along with another round of long period southwesterly
swell to begin moving through the region. This would likely create
Small Craft Advisory conditions by early next week.
