The National Weather Service in Upton NY has issued a

* Special Marine Warning for...

  Sandy Hook NJ to Fire Island Inlet NY out 20 NM...
  New York Harbor...

* Until 330 PM EDT.

* At 234 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms capable of producing
  waterspouts were located along a line extending from near The
  Verrazano Narrows Bridge to near South Amboy, moving east at 20
  knots.

  HAZARD...Waterspouts, wind gusts in excess of 50 knots, and large
           hail.

  SOURCE...Radar indicated.

  IMPACT...Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally
           hazardous seas. Boats could suffer significant structural
           damage in high winds and hail. Small craft could capsize
           in suddenly higher waves.

* Locations impacted include...
  Sandy Hook Bay, The Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Raritan Bay, Lower
  New York Harbor, and Rockaway Inlet.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until these storms pass.
Wind gusts in excess of 50 knots, large hail, high waves, lightning,
and heavy rain are expected with these storms. If caught on the open
water stay below deck if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal
objects.

These thunderstorms may produce sudden waterspouts. Waterspouts can
easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas. Seek safe
harbor immediately. If caught on the open water stay below deck if
possible.
