Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High to moderate

SYNOPSIS...High pressure over the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas
will move east throughout the next several days while low pressure
replaces it. More specifically, a low lingers over the Bering Sea
through most of the forecast period, and weaker low pressure spreads
east across the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas through Saturday.

PKZ860-Cape Halkett to Flaxman Island from 15 to 80 nm-

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Off the north coast of Alaska, westerly winds
will shift easterly on Thursday, southerly on Friday,  and then
variable from Saturday through Monday. Sea ice will continue to melt
as it moves with the direction of the winds. Given the variable
winds expected starting on Saturday, sea ice movement will also be
quite variable for the latter half of the forecast period.

PKZ858-Cape Beaufort to Point Franklin from 15 to 85 nm-

The main ice edge extends from near Utqiagvik to 70 5N 151 18W to
70 59N 157 14W to 69 59N 169 59W to 71 27N 174 4W and
continues into Russian waters. The ice edge is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from
near Utqiagvik to 55 nm west-southwest of Utqiagvik to 210 nm west
of Utqiagvik to 100 nm northwest of Cape Lisburne to 215 nm
northwest of Cape Lisburne and continues into Russian waters. The
ice edge is open water.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Southerly winds will persist through Sunday and
then become more southwesterly on Monday. Expect sea ice to continue
melting and retreat to the north through the forecast period.
