Coastal Flood Statement

Coastal Hazard Message
National Weather Service Honolulu HI

...MINOR COASTAL FLOODING DURING HIGH TIDE THIS WEEK FOR LOW
LYING COASTAL AREAS OF ALL ISLANDS...
...HIGH SURF ADVISORY CANCELLED...

.Peak monthly high tides combined with water levels that are
running higher than predicted will lead to minor flooding along
the shoreline and in low-lying coastal areas. Coastal flooding is
possible around the daily peak tide, which will be during the
early morning hours.

The highest swell energy with the current north-northwest swell
continues to pass just northeast of the Hawaiian Islands. Swell
heights have underperformed as compared to recent forecast model
guidance and north swell bias trends. Therefore the High Surf
Advisory (HSA) for north and west facing shores was cancelled this
morning, as surf heights will remain just below HSA thresholds.

...HIGH SURF ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 5 PM FRIDAY TO 5 AM CHST
MONDAY...
...COASTAL FLOOD STATEMENT IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY AFTERNOON
THROUGH LATE SUNDAY NIGHT...

* WHAT...Hazardous surf of 9 to 13 ft and isolated minor coastal
  flooding expected.

* WHERE...North and west facing reefs.

* WHEN...From 5 PM Friday to 5 AM ChST Monday.

* IMPACTS...Flooding in low-lying coastal areas. Dangerous swimming
and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...As TS Fung-wong makes its nearby approach
to the north of Yap tonight and early Friday, surf will steadily
rise, first along north facing reefs, then along west facing
reefs by Friday morning. Surf is expected to peak at 13 to 14 ft
Friday and Friday night before subsiding very slowly over the
weekend. Surf heights could reach dangerous levels of 15 ft if
Fung-wong intensifies faster than currently expected. Increased
surf paired with the King Tide high tide cycles will also result
in minor coastal inundation and increased erosion.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to
dangerous surf conditions.

...COASTAL FLOOD STATEMENT IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON...
...HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM CHST FRIDAY...
...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY
AFTERNOON...

* WHAT...Large breaking waves of 9 to 11 feet in the surf zone with
dangerous rip currents. Isolated minor coastal flooding.

* WHERE...Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan.

* WHEN...Until 4 PM ChST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Some water on low lying roads and property. Dangerous
swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip
currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into
  deeper water.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...As Tropical Storm Fung-wong 32W passes
southwest of Guam, surf conditions are expected to deteriorate
along east facing reefs initially, then south reefs, and
eventually west reefs as 32W strengthens well west of the
Marianas. This, coupled with elevated high tides, may produce
minor beach erosion along these reefs.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Rip currents will be life threatening. Inexperienced swimmers
should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

Rip currents will be life threatening. If caught in a rip
current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If
able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to
escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
