Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
357 AM CDT Sun Mar 16 2025

.DISCUSSION...

Minimum humidity west of the Missouri River will drop to 20 to 25
percent this afternoon, and southerly winds will increase ahead of
an incoming low pressure center. Winds are expected to stay around
20 gusting to 25 miles per hour, and will progress across the
forecast area fairly quickly, lasting only a few hours over central
South Dakota. In addition, recent snowmelt and/or any remaining
snowpack is thought to have provided moisture to the fuels. This
puts an already marginal Red Flag consideration to rest, and we will
be holding off for today.

Monday may have higher concern due to similar wind speeds (this time
out of the northwest) as well as similar minimum humidities. No
precipitation is expected through the day Monday.

...HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Unfavorable weather conditions and low moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there
is high potential for a fire to spread. Outdoor burning should be
restricted to early morning or evening hours when wind speeds are
usually lower and the relative humidity is higher.

The outlook for Monday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the high to very high category.
