Fire Weather Planning Forecast for South Central Texas
National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio TX
301 AM CDT Wed Mar 19 2025

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM CDT THIS EVENING...

.DISCUSSION...

Widespread critical fire weather is expected today as a Pacific
front brings an expansive swath of breezy northwesterly post-frontal
winds and exceptionally dry air. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for
all of South-Central Texas until 9 PM. As of 3 AM, the front was
beginning to push across the Southern Edwards Plateau, and is
expected to move across the I-35 corridor 6 to 8 AM and the Coastal
Plains 8 to 10 AM. Gusty winds and critically low humidities below
20 percent are expected to quickly follow behind the front. Before
sunrise, northwest winds of 15-20 mph will mainly develop along
higher elevations in the Hill Country and southern Edwards Plateau.
Winds will increase quickly areawide after sunrise with 15-30 mph
northwest winds becoming widespread across all of South-Central
Texas by noon. Minimum relative humidities are expected to fall to 5-
15 percent areawide, with the driest air maintaining throughout the
afternoon into the early evening. The strongest winds are expected
over the southern Edwards Plateau and northern Hill Country,
where gusts up to 45 mph are expected especially during the late
morning to early afternoon hours.

A weak front is forecast to move north to south across South-Central
Texas Wednesday evening, causing winds to shift to a northerly
flow. The front will briefly interrupt the typical overnight
weakening of winds, with 12-15 mph sustained winds and gusts up to
35 mph following the front. This enhanced flow will be out of our
area by about 4 AM. Dry conditions persist into Thursday with
widespread humidities of 10 to 20 percent Thursday afternoon,
likely supporting widespread elevated fire weather conditions.
While winds will be light in eastern areas, breezy southerly flow
is forecast to develop over the Rio Grande Plains and southern
Edwards Plateau, potentially producing some critical fire weather
conditions. A Rangeland Fire Danger Statement may be needed for
these western areas for Thursday.

The southerly moist return flow expands across the rest of the
region Thursday night and persists into Sunday, gradually raising
moisture across South-Central Texas. Friday afternoon will be breezy
for areas outside of the Rio Grande Plains with south winds
sustained at 15-20 mph. Minimum relative humidities are expected to
remain above 20 percent for most areas, but may dip low enough to
produce elevated fire weather concerns over the Hill Country and
along the Rio Grande. Fire weather conditions will be more limited
over the weekend as winds lessen and moisture continues to
increase, though diurnal dry line advances may briefly bring low
humidity values to the southern Edwards Plateau and northern Hill
Country. A front arrives late Sunday through Sunday night with a
low chance (20- 30%) of wetting rain with some thunderstorms also
possible for eastern areas. Post-frontal winds should remain
below 10 mph before a moistening southerly flow arrives midweek.
