The Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) is soliciting comments through August 24, 2025 on the proposed discontinuation of the Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS) aerosol component forecasts initialized at 06 and 18 UTC. The proposed termination date for these products is on or before April 1, 2026. The GEFS aerosol component provides 120 hour global forecasts of dust, sea salt, smoke from wildfires, and other particles in the atmosphere that can impact visibility or human health. Currently these forecasts are initialized four times per day at 00, 06, 12, and 18 UTC valid times. EMC proposes reducing the frequency of the aerosol component initialization from four times per day to only the 00 and 12 UTC valid times. No changes to the 00 or 12 UTC initialized forecasts for the GEFS aerosol component are proposed. No changes to the GEFS ensemble forecasts or control member forecasts initialized for the 06 or 18 UTC cycles are proposed. EMC proposes discontinuing the 06 and 18 UTC forecasts of the GEFS aerosol member and is soliciting comments through August 24, 2025 To provide feedback regarding this change please contact: Email: emc.products.feedback@noaa.gov Google Form: Soliciting Comments on the Removal of GEFS 06UTC and 18UTC Aerosol Forecasts National Public Information Statements are online at: https://www.weather.gov/notification
