861 FXUS01 KWBC 221829 PMDSPD Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 129 PM EST Sat Feb 22 2025 Valid 00Z Sun Feb 23 2025 - 00Z Tue Feb 25 2025 ...Atmospheric River to bring heavy rain, gusty winds and scattered instances of flooding to the Northwest through early next week... ...Showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall along the Gulf Coast... ...Temperatures begin to slowly moderate this weekend across the southern U.S., while milder temperatures return to the Great Plains... Persistent troughing in the eastern Pacific will support an Atmospheric River event across the Pacific Northwest this weekend. Heavy rainfall is expected to develop this evening ahead of a decaying surface low pressure system. Another system will reinforce the moisture fetch and associated rainfall over the Pacific NW on Sunday. Slight Risks of Excessive Rainfall leading to Flash Flooding are in effect over coastal and inland valleys of Washington and northern Oregon on Sunday and Monday, where between 4-7 inches of rainfall may accumulate. Moderate to heavy snow is possible over higher levels of the Northern Cascades/Rockies through Monday. Runoff from mountains could exacerbate drainage issues and lead to small stream and river flooding as well. A low pressure system will move across the Gulf Coast this weekend. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop along a convergence zone that sets up along the coast. The heaviest rainfall is expected Sunday afternoon/evening when a warm front and instability work their way into the Central Gulf Coast. Storms shift into the Florida Peninsula Sunday night into Monday. There`s potential for isolated instances of Flash Flooding over parts of South Florida on Monday. Upper-level ridging over much of the West will expand into the Central U.S. this weekend. Mild temperatures are likely to follow suit, with highs in the Plains between 15-25 degrees above average on Sunday and Monday. Temperatures moderate considerably over the eastern half of the country due to the expanding ridge into the Plains and a departing shortwave in the East. Parts of Texas will experience a 30-40 degree high temperature swing between today and Monday, in which highs will climb from the 40s today into the 70s by Monday.
