Survey Summary:
An NWS Damage Assessment team found considerable damage in
Lynndyl consistent with straight-line winds of 80-100 mph, along
with significant wind-driven hail damage. The event started near
the northwest side of town where 34 empty rail cars were all blown
over toward the east-southeast. In Lynndyl, homes sustained
immense siding, window, and roof damage on west- facing sides due
destructive wind-driven hail. The wind-driven hail also stripped
trees, and much of the vegetation in town of their leaves. The
destructive straight-line winds also uprooted numerous trees, with
a few snapped. Many vehicles and homes had west-facing windows
blown out by the wind-driven hail. A corn field adjacent to the
south and east of town saw corn, which was near harvest ready, was
shredded by wind-driven hail and laid down flat from west to east
with all stalks snapped and bent over near the ground. While
exact hail size measurements are unknown, photos showed the
largest hail size near the size of golf balls, but sizes were
mixed and a video from 2 to 3 hours after the storm showed areas
of hail drifted along the west sides of buildings.

The maximum wind speed estimates of 100 mph comes from
several damage indicators, including the numerous uprooted and a
few snapped hardwood trees, several free-standing power poles that
were blown down as well as stripping a shingles from west to east
off of a couple of homes in town, and a structural awning on a
house that was ripped off and deposited in the backyard. All of
the damage in the town of Lynndyl showed generally west to east
orientation. A divergent pattern was noted in the wind field on
the north end of town where trees north of Railroad Ave and US-6
were down toward the northeast while trees south of this were down
toward the east and east-southeast. In addition, the team noted a
metal car port that was flattened in place, along with a small
pole barn across the street which was also destroyed and flatten
in place. All of these indicators are consistent with a
signficiant microbust event with downward and outward (divergent)
wind patterns.

Around 8 miles southwest of Lynndyl, sagebrush was observed
stripped of its vegetation along an approximately 2 mile wide
swath where it crossed route 174, thanks to strong wind and wind-
driven hail. The team observed this damage started southwest of
the road near some retaining ponds, giving the approximate start
point of this swath of wind-driven hail damage. A few sporadic
wind-driven hail indicators were observed as far east Leamington
UT, giving the approximate end point of this roughly 17 mile long,
2 mile wide swath of destructive straight-line wind-driven hail.
