Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
219 PM MST Sat Feb 22 2025

.SYNOPSIS...A weak disturbance will bring light valley rain and
mountain snow to northern Utah Sunday afternoon into Monday
morning. Warming temperatures are expected in the wake of this
system Monday. A largely dry cold front will cross the area
Tuesday, bringing a brief cool down Tuesday into Wednesday.
Temperatures will once again trend upward later in the week.

.DISCUSSION...A quieter forecast is in store across the region for
the next seven days. Early afternoon upper air and satellite
analysis indicates a weakening shortwave trough is approaching
western Utah. The northern jet remains quite active across the
Pacific Northwest. Utah will remain largely on the dry side of the
jet through the next seven days, with two weak shortwave troughs
bringing the potential for light precipitation to mainly northern
Utah.

The first, noted above, will cross the area Sunday afternoon into
Monday morning. Relatively weak cold air advection combined with
moisture advection will support periods of showers, largely valley
rain and mountain snow...mainly north of I-84 by Sunday afternoon.
Moist westerly flow will remain in place through Monday morning. A
period of shortwave ridging will shift into the area by Monday
afternoon.

In response, warming temperatures can be expected Tuesday across
most locations. This warm-up will be brief however, as a series of
shortwave troughs cross north of the area before a stronger...but
largely dry cold front shifts across the state Tuesday morning
into Tuesday afternoon. Much of the guidance envelope is dry with
this system, though a subset of ensemble members do suggest a
period of light showers or sprinkles across the northern mountains
Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening.

Tuesday afternoon and evening will see gusty winds in eastern
portions of Utah and Uinta County, WY. There is around a 50%
chance of wind gusts in excess of 45 mph for the western Uinta
Basin, and a less than 25% chance in Castle Country and Uinta
County, WY. Something to monitor though.

This cold front will bring slightly cooler temperatures,
especially across northern Utah Tuesday into Wednesday...with
warming temperatures once again expected in the wake of this
system through the remainder of the work week.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Light northwest winds will prevail through
around 03Z with clouds decreasing. Winds will transition to
southeast around 03Z, with mostly clear conditions into Sunday.
Clouds will increase early as a weak storm system approaches from
the northwest. Broken to overcast conditions in VFR range are
likely much of the day. Southeast winds will transition to
northwest around 21Z. There is around a 30% chance for light rain
capable of MVFR ceilings from 02-06Z.

.REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Clouds will decrease
throughout southwest Wyoming and Utah into the evening, then
increase for southwest Wyoming and northern Utah early Sunday. VFR
conditions are likely through the morning. Light rain will track
into far northern Utah around 19Z. There is roughly a 30-60%
chance for northern valley precipitation, with the most likely
areas in far northern Utah. Rain will be capable of MVFR
conditions, while conditions will be cold enough for snow or rain
mixed with snow with LIFR or IFR conditions near the Idaho border
and for southwest Wyoming. Mostly clear, dry conditions are likely
elsewhere.
