...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER EXPECTED ACROSS PUERTO RICO, VIEQUES,
CULEBRA, AND THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS MAINLY FROM 10 AM TO 5 PM
AST TODAY...

A very dry air mass remains in place and strong easterly winds
continue today with winds between 15 to 20 mph with gusts around
35 mph. Similar to previous days, these conditions combined with
little to no wetting rainfall, ongoing rainfall deficits, stressed
vegetation, and dry fuels will maintain conditions favorable for
rapid fire spread. The greatest concern remains across southern
and southwestern Puerto Rico, where fuels are particularly dry and
recent fire activity has been more frequent. However, elevated
fire danger will continue across Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra,
and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The northern periphery of an approaching tropical wave (Invest
AL92) will approach the U.S. Virgin Islands and the southern coast
of Puerto Rico later this afternoon, slightly increasing the
moisture content across the area. Nonetheless, the dry conditions
will persist until then. Therefore, a Fire Danger Statement is in
effect from 10 AM through 5 PM AST. Residents and visitors are
encouraged to avoid outdoor burning, as conditions will likely be
favorable for wildfire ignition and rapid spread.

Fire and emergency officials should be aware that weather
conditions are becoming more conducive for the ignition and
spread of wildfires.

Fire danger statements are issued when fire weather conditions
are approaching, but not meeting or exceeding, Red Flag Warning
criteria.
