...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED ACROSS PORTIONS OF
PUERTO RICO AND SMALLER ISLANDS TODAY...

A Fire Danger Statement is in effect for portions of the southern
coastal plains and hills, as well as the eastern and northern
coastal plains of Puerto Rico and smaller islands due to favorable
conditions for rapid fire spread. Prolonged rainfall deficits,
abnormal to severe drought conditions, and critically dry fuels
continue, with Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) values remaining
above critical thresholds. Seven-day rainfall totals remain below 10
percent of normal across most of Puerto Rico, with some areas below
5 percent, while 30-day rainfall totals remain below 25 percent,
including below 10 percent across portions of the southern coastal
plains.

Relative humidity values are forecast to fall into the upper 40s to
lower 50s this afternoon across southern Puerto Rico and adjacent
lower elevations. Although winds are expected to be slightly weaker
than recent days, easterly winds of 10 to 15 mph with higher gusts
will continue to support elevated fire weather conditions. Any fires
that develop could spread rapidly through dry vegetation. Fire
weather conditions will continue to be monitored closely, and a Red
Flag Warning may be required if conditions become more favorable for
rapid fire growth. Residents and visitors are urged to avoid outdoor
burning and exercise extreme caution with open flames, discarded
cigarettes, or any activity capable of producing sparks.

Fire and emergency officials should be aware that weather
conditions are becoming more conducive for the ignition and
spread of wildfires.

Fire danger statements are issued when fire weather conditions
are approaching, but not meeting or exceeding, Red Flag Warning
criteria.
