...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER CONDITIONS EXPECTED ACROSS THE SOUTHERN,
EASTERN, AND NORTHERN COASTAL PLAINS AND HILLS OF PUERTO RICO
TODAY...

A warmer and drier air mass accompanied by Saharan dust will spread
across Puerto Rico today behind a departing tropical wave. Mostly
sunny skies and little to no rainfall are expected across the
fire-prone areas, allowing temperatures to rise and afternoon
humidity to decrease. Although the prevailing flow will weaken
somewhat, daytime heating and sea-breeze development will enhance
winds to 15 to 20 mph, with gusts of 25 mph or higher possible
during the afternoon.

These weather conditions will overlap with already very dry and
highly stressed vegetation and soils following prolonged rainfall
deficits. Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) values remain above 700
across many coastal and lower-elevation areas. Therefore, an
elevated fire danger is expected today. The combination of warm
and dry conditions, little to no rainfall, highly susceptible
fuels, and enhanced afternoon winds will favor easier ignition and
rapid fire spread where fires develop.


Fire and emergency officials should be aware that weather
conditions are becoming more conducive for the ignition and
spread of wildfires.

Fire danger statements are issued when fire weather conditions
are approaching, but not meeting or exceeding, Red Flag Warning
criteria.
