.DISCUSSION...
The oppressive heat will continue again today and Wednesday, as upper level ridging
over the Southern Plains across the Mississippi Valley maintains its grip on the
region. Thus, temperatures will again near or exceed 100 degrees over much of the
area this afternoon, with heat indices ranging from 105-115 degrees. Despite the
lack of any upper level disturbances aloft, available moisture and strong heating
should yield isolated showers and thunderstorms over portions of the area this
afternoon, but should diminish during the evening. The upper ridge will begin to
retreat back to the west Wednesday, allowing for a weak upper level disturbance to
settle south into the area Wednesday afternoon through Friday, yielding an increase
in cloud cover, slightly cooler temperatures, and scattered showers and thunderstorms
each day. This disturbance should drift south of the region by this weekend, ahead of
the ridging out west which should build back east into our area, thus returning the
oppressive hot and humid conditions. The heat may be tapered back somewhat by early next
week though, as the ridge weakens slightly as remains anchored over West Texas.
