On Thursday, October 17th, 2024, at 1017 AM PDT, the National Weather Service Forecast Offices in Seattle, Portland, Spokane, and Pendleton will participate in the Great Washington ShakeOut Earthquake and tsunami drill with state and local emergency management officials. This is part of a global earthquake preparedness effort. Millions of people worldwide will practice how to drop, cover, and hold on at 1017 AM PDT on October 17th during the Great ShakeOut. Washingtonians can join them by registering for the 2024 Great Washington ShakeOut. Participation is a great way for your family or organization to be better prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes and their impacts. Over one million people in Washington are expected to participate. Register for free today at www.shakeout.org/washington National Weather Service Offices across Washington will disseminate a Required Monthly Test (RMT) message via the 21 NOAA Weather Radio stations that serve the state to activate the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and help kick off the Great ShakeOut drill on October 17th at 1017 AM PDT. Broadcasters will carry the EAS message on television and radio to help reach more of the state`s residents, along with those who have NOAA all-hazard weather radio receivers. This will not be a test of Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) sent to cell phones. In coastal areas, the Great ShakeOut earthquake and tsunami drill will also include a test of the All Hazards Alert Broadcast tsunami sirens. The purpose of the test is to get the public familiar with what the sirens will sound like during a tsunami event. All of Washingtons 120+ tsunami sirens along the inner and outer coast will be tested at 1017 AM using the real wailing sound of a tsunami warning, not the Westminster Chimes that are typically used during the monthly tests. Please dont call 911. Preparedness experts encourage you to participate in the Great ShakeOut.
