.DISCUSSION...
Windy with colder than normal temperatures today and Tuesday.
Cold air has swept over the region. A cold front is now well
east of the forecast area. In its wake, expect blustery
northwest winds and below normal temperatures. Scattered flurries
are expected, but no meaningful accumulation today. A dusting
is possible tonight.
This is some of the coldest air so far this season. Highs today
will only be in the 30s with lows tonight in the lower 20s.
Water pumps need to be winterized. Hoses should be drained.
Enhanced fire danger concerns may return for the latter half of
the week as temperatures trend warmer. Winds will also remain gusty
through Wednesday before diminishing Thursday and Friday. Little
or no precipitation is expected the entire week.
For Aviation...Strong gusty northwest winds will generate moderate
to severe turbulence, particularly at ridgetop level. Sustained
northwest surface winds of 8-16kts with gusts of 20 to 30kts likely
for all nearby flight terminals today. Stronger gusts of 35-40 kts are
possible near ridgetops and through the mountain gaps. Snow showers
are ongoing along the west side of the Appalachian divide with persistent
IFR cigs/vsbys near and just west of Bluefield (BLF) and Lewisburg (LWB).
Expecting clear air for all terminals east of Roanoke (ROA).
