.DISCUSSION...

Happy Fourth of July to everyone and especially those reading
this today! I`ll start off by reminding everyone to please remain
fire aware today and tonight! We`ll have a slightly enhanced
zephyr breeze today causing elevated to marginally critical fire
weather conditions this afternoon and evening. For additional
fire weather details, please see the Fire Weather section of the
AFD.

The rest of today will be 5-10 degrees cooler than normal for
this time of year. In western NV and northeastern CA it`ll still
feel really nice out with highs in the 80`s, just may be a bit
chilly in the Sierra with highs in the 60`s. Area lakes,
particularly Pyramid Lake, Donner Lake, Washoe Lake, Frenchman
Lake, and the Lahontan Reservoir could see gusts of 20-25 mph
(just below advisory criteria) between 1 PM and 9 PM causing wave
heights of 1-2 feet, so please use caution if you`re on the lakes
to celebrate the holiday. We also have a couple storms already
firing off in far northern Washoe County, Surprise Valley, and
into northern Lassen County at the time of this AFD. We`ll
maintain a 10-25% chance of showers and thunderstorms in those
areas this afternoon. As for tonight, winds will still be breezy
around sunset time and will become light after 10-11 PM.

Looking ahead to Saturday and next week we dry out for the most
part and continue to warm back up into the upper 90`s in lower
valleys by Monday and could potentially hit 100 in Reno by
Friday! A cut-off low off the coast of CA could bring some low
chances for showers Sunday - Tuesday. Some ensembles and CAMs are
showing signs of very low PoPs along the Sierra those days, so
we`ll monitor that as we get closer.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions are expected across the region today and tomorrow.
Breezy westerly winds this afternoon may cause some LLWS and
turbulence this afternoon and evening across the Sierra Front
(KRNO/KCXP/KMEV). Dry conditions are expected this weekend along
with temperatures starting another warming trend.

.FIRE WEATHER...

For Independence Day, elevated to locally critical fire weather
conditions are expected again due to breezy westerly winds (gusts
up to 25-30 mph) and low minimum relative humidity values (~7-15%)
during the afternoon hours. However, the duration of elevated to
critical conditions appears to be brief, and only over isolated
portions of northern Washoe, the higher elevations of the NV
Basin and Range, and the eastern Sierra Front. The area
surrounding the Barber Fire appears to have multiple hours of
critical conditions with the latest forecast update. Interests in
the vicinity of the fire should take the proper precautions.

Critical fire weather conditions are not anticipated over the
weekend at this time as lighter winds are forecast (afternoon
gusts up to around 20 mph possible) throughout the area.
