.Discussion...
Warm and mainly dry conditions will continue across the district
today, as increasing west to southwest flow aloft produces critical
fire weather conditions this afternoon across the San Luis Valley, and
the valley floors of Chaffee, Fremont and Custer counties. Isolated
thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon and early evening across
the Pikes Peak region and southeast plains, although wetting rains are
not expected. On Sunday, stronger southwest winds will produce widespread
critical fire weather conditions across much of the eastern plains. As
has been noted this past week, no fire weather highlights are
anticipated at this time due to fuels still going through green-up. Over
the mountains on Sunday, showers will become more widespread, with
wetting rainfall along the Continental Divide.
An upper low system will cross the Rockies Monday and Tuesday,
bringing slightly cooler temperatures and a better chance for some
precipitation to the region. Drying returns on Wednesday through
the end of the work week.
Surface-based inversions will break early today, between 0800 and
0900, with ventilation rates improving to Excellent for much of the
district by 1200 and lasting until 2000. Smoke dispersion trends for
Sunday will be similar in timing and ventilation rates.
