On Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 1017 AM PDT, the National Weather Service Forecast Offices across Oregon and Washington will participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake and tsunami drill with state and local emergency management officials. This is part of a global earthquake preparedness effort. Millions of people worldwide will practice how to drop, cover, and hold on at 1017 AM PDT on October 17th during the Great ShakeOut. Oregonians can join them by registering for the 2024 Great Oregon ShakeOut. Participation is a great way for your family or organization to be better prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes and their impacts. Millions of people worldwide will participate in earthquake drills at work, school, or home! Register for free today at www.shakeout.org/oregon or www.shakeout.org/washington. National Weather Service Offices across Oregon and Washington will disseminate a Required Monthly Test (RMT) message via the NOAA Weather Radio stations that serve the state to activate the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and help kickoff the Great ShakeOut drill. Broadcasters will carry the EAS message to help reach more of the state`s citizens, along with those who have all-hazard weather radio receivers. For coastal areas of Washington, the Great ShakeOut drill will include a test of the All Hazards Alert Broadcast tsunami sirens. The purpose of the test is to get the public familiar with what the sirens will sound like during a tsunami event. All of Washingtons 120+ tsunami sirens will be tested at 1017 AM using the real wailing sound of a tsunami warning, not the Westminster Chimes that are typically used during the monthly tests. Please do not call 911. Preparedness experts encourage you to participate in the Great ShakeOut.
