The following information is based on recent satellite imagery/data, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. ...SPECIAL FEATURES... TROPICAL CYCLONES... Super Typhoon Dolphin continues to slowly strengthen as it moves NW. STY Dolphin is centered near 16.0N 166.3E, moving NW at 12 mph. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 165 mph as Dolphin passes S of Wake Island. Latest satellite imagery displays a well defined eye, showing that Dolphin made a splendid recovery from its eyewall replacement cycle. Widespread heavy showers are found within 120 miles of the center of STY Dolphin, with scattered thunderstorms concentrated within the eyewall. A feeder band wraps around Dolphin, extending W from near 19N180 to 22N168E to turning SSW to 16N163E. Scattered to numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms are found within the feeder band up to 350 miles from the center. STY Dolphin remains in an area of very favorable conditions for continued development and is expected to continue to slowly strengthen over the next couple of days before it begins to weaken. For more information on STY Dolphin, please refer to bulletins issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center under WMO header WTPN31 PGTW and by the National Weather Service under WMO header WTPQ31 PGUM. TROPICAL AND MONSOON DISTURBANCES... A weak circulation, Invest 94W, remains SW of Guam, NE of Yap Proper, centered near 12.8N 140.3E. 94W is drifting slowly W, with little change in intensity. Little convection is found with Invest 94W except to the WSW along the monsoon trough N of Yap Proper, where numerous showers and a few thunderstorms are found with enhanced convergence leading into 94W. This invest is helping to fuel a weak monsoon surge across Palau and far western Yap State. Invest 94W will continue to slowly drift W, maintaining enhanced winds to the S of the monsoon trough over Palau and Yap Proper. No change in intensity is expected. ...OTHER WEATHER SYSTEMS... MONSOON TROUGH... The monsoon trough enters the region near 12N130E, extending E to Invest 94W. The trough then continues ENE into STY Dolphin, then turns SE to beyond the Date Line near 8N. Over the W portion of the monsoon trough, Invest 94W is helping to enhance a weak monsoon surge over Palau and western Yap State, resulting in scattered to numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms from N of Koror, Palau to beyond 130E. Farther E, increasing convergence S of the trough is producing scattered to numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms SE of Guam, across western Chuuk State to Weno. STY Dolphin is producing a monsoon surge across portions of eastern Micronesia from Pohnpei State across the southern Marshall Islands. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are found across Pohnpei, Kosrae and the Marshall Islands within the surge. Enhanced convergence N of the monsoon trough, SE of STY Dolphin, is producing a band of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms well E of Wotje and Utirik. W of 155E, the monsoon trough looks to remain quasi- stationary with little change in intensity, though Invest 94W will slowly drift W and maintain a weak monsoon surge W of 140E. E of 155E, STY Dolphin will continue to pull the monsoon trough a bit farther N while maintaining a monsoon surge across eastern Micronesia that should spread into Chuuk State over the next 24 hours. Little change in intensity is expected over the next couple of days. TRADE-WIND TROUGHS... A trade-wind trough extends N from Invest 94W to end near 23N139E. Scattered showers are found W of the trough over the S portion of the trough, with little convection seen northward. Another area of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms is found N of 20N. The trough will continue to slowly move W with little change in intensity. Another weak trade-wind trough is found between Iwo To and Minami Torishima, extending NNE from near 21N148E to beyond 25N near 149E. Enhanced convection with this trough is generating scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms N of 22N. The trough will continue progressing W with little change in intensity. $$ Kleeschulte
