Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
229 PM SST Fri Jun 6 2025

.Short term...

A ridge of high pressure over American Samoa led to a fair mix of
sun and clouds throughout the morning and early afternoon hours.
However, satellite imagery shows a trough just to the west of
Samoa moving eastward towards American Samoa. Wind convergence is
expected to weaken as it approaches the territory, but an elevated
chance of showers is forecast for region. This rainfall is not
expected to be heavy enough to cause flash flooding. Otherwise, we
are forecasting plenty of clouds in the overnight hours with winds
remaining light.

The weak trough is expected to remain at least near the territory
throughout the weekend. Scattered showers (50% chance) are
forecast for Saturday and numerous showers (60% chance) on
Sunday. If showers occur on both of these days, rainfall would
spotty and not heavy. Winds are to remain light with mostly cloudy
skies.

.Long term...

A strong ridge of high pressure from the southwest is expected to
push the trough away from the territory. This will also create
partly cloudy skies with plenty of sunshine throughout the days.
Scattered showers (40% chance) are forecast on Monday, but
becoming isolated (20% chance) on Tuesday through the rest of the
week. East/southeasterly trade winds, however, increase up to
around 20 to 25 mph.

Severe weather is not expected for the next 7 days.

.Marine...

Data from the PacIOOS buoys to the east of Aunu`u and to the west
of Tutuila show seas around 6 to 7 feet for the majority of the
American Samoa coastal waters. With weak winds and no major swell
moving through the region this weekend, expect conditions to be
below Small Craft Advisory levels. However, east/southeasterly
trades are forecast to increase starting early next week and
another round of long period south/southwesterly swell is
anticipated to begin late Sunday night. Therefore, sea conditions
are forecast to be benign, especially for the trade wind season,
but back to Small Craft Advisory levels by Monday with a High Surf
Advisory likely.
