.DISCUSSION...
Partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of showers have been
observed throughout the day. The most noticeable feature is the
high humidity felt across the islands. Daily high temperatures
have remained in the mid 80 degrees with relative humidity
climbing above 70% resulting in heat indices rising to near 100
degrees in the afternoon hours. The moderate to fresh east breeze
may cool down conditions from time to time as it will likely
remain throughout the week, but will not lower the humidity.
However, model data is showing a mid- level high pressure system
anchoring over the area throughout the forecast period. This
synoptic feature will dominate weather patterns for the week as it
suppresses any major convective cloud growth. Thus, keeping the
high temperatures and humid conditions over the area for the week.
Also, any expected showers may be brief and heavy at times, and
occur mainly from low-level clouds embedded within the east wind
flow and enhanced by topography.

Therefore, expect isolated to scattered showers with moderate to
fresh breeze and humid conditions to remain for this forecast
period.

The threat of high seas and surfs, and strong rip currents
remains for coastal waters of American Samoa. Manual observations
of seas continue to show rough and choppy conditions in the last
couple of hours. Data from the PacIOOS buoys (Aunu`u and King-
Poloa) together with ASCAT satellite altimetry swaths supports
these observations. At the Aunu`u buoy, heights of 8 to 10 feet
with short periods around 7 to 9 seconds indicate wind-driven
waves, as easterlies remain at a moderate to fresh breeze. At the
King- Poloa buoy, heights of 6 to 8 feet are evident with periods
around 14 and 15 seconds long, indicating much higher surfs and
strong rip currents at the west facing shores. Although heights
are much less to the west coast of Tutuila island, the long
periods will likely enhance the surfs and generate strong rip
currents as waves get closer to shore. Model data is showing these
conditions remaining over the coastal waters through at least
midweek. However, if winds will maintain its moderate to fresh
strength throughout the week, it is likely that seas will remain
rough for this forecast period. Will continue to monitor
conditions as the week progresses and issue or extend alerts if
warranted. In the meantime, advisories for small crafts and high
surfs will remain in effect.
