Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
114 PM SST Mon Apr 21 2025

.Short term...

As of this morning and early afternoon, satellite imagery has
shown scattered cumulus clouds over American Samoa. However,
rainfall from a trough is observed to the west and south of the
territory. This trough is weak and is expected to continue
weakening through Tuesday as a low pressure system centered well
to the southeast moves further away from the region. Scattered to
numerous showers are in the forecast through early Wednesday
morning, but rainfall is not expected to be heavy enough to cause
flash flooding. Light southerly winds are also forecast to
continue through early Wednesday morning.

.Long term...

For Wednesday and Thursday, we expect a ridge of high pressure
from the south to bring in abnormally dry air over the territory.
This will reduce the risk of rainfall to isolated to scattered (20
to 30% chance) and a southern breeze is to increase to 15 mph with
plenty of sunshine throughout the days.

For Friday and the weekend, we will monitor the strength of the
aforementioned ridge to see if it will be strong enough to keep a
trough to the north of the territory. Even if the trough moves
over the region, severe weather would not be expected. Otherwise,
more sun than clouds would be forecast again during this period. Winds
become southeasterly and is to remain around 10 to 15 mph.

.Marine...

The latest information from the PacIOOS buoys to the east of
Aunu`u and to the west of Tutuila shows elevated seas and period
timings. With high periods timings and swell from the
south/southwest, this had led to surf high enough for the High
Surf Advisory criteria along the southern and western shores.
Surf is expected to remain elevated through Tuesday afternoon
before slowly easing. Seas are also forecast to ease beginning
late Tuesday and will likely reach below the Small Craft Advisory
criteria by Thursday. Winds are a gentle southerly breeze this
morning, but will likely become a moderate southerly breeze by
midweek and a southeasterly moderate breeze late in the week.
