Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
219 PM SST Tue Aug 19 2025

.Short term...
A high pressure system holds fair weather for the territory. This
feature is also producing breezy east winds that is expected to
remain through Thursday. Latest satellite data shows fair weather
cumulus clouds that confirms the presence of the high pressure.
Expect partly cloudy skies and isolated showers as well as trade
winds will remain through Wednesday as the high pressure
dominates in the area.

.Long term...
By Thursday, moisture from a trough northwest will gradually make
its way to the Islands. Expect showers to become scattered during
the day, then increase to widespread overnight when the trough is
centered over the Islands. Most model data comes in agreement for
this uptick in showers, while GFS downplays it. Because we are a
few days out, there is some uncertainty and a possibility models
will line up later on. However, we expect the trough to remain in
the area through the weekend.

.Marine...
Latest wave heights at the Aunu`u PacIOOS buoy are around 6 to 8
feet. Rough ocean conditions persists for the territory due to
trade winds. Expect seas to remain choppy as trade winds continue
through the new week. Additionally, model data suggests seas
building Thursday, which is typical with long lasting trades.
