597 FXUS65 KPIH 110954 AFDPIH Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 354 AM MDT Tue Mar 11 2025 .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night. It will be another very warm and dry day across southeast Idaho today with well above normal high temperatures in the 50s to lower 60s valleys and mainly 40s to lower 50s mountains. Rain and snow will move into the central mountains during the day on Wednesday and gradually spread east overnight. Snow levels will start out between 6 and 7 thousand feet on Wednesday ahead of the cold front and drop to 5 to 6 thousand feet Wednesday. Any snowfall of over 6 inches Wednesday and Wednesday night will be above 7 thousand feet. Rain and snow will spread over the remainder of southeast Idaho late Wednesday night. Highs Wednesday will remain warm ahead of the frontal system with 50s to near 60 again in the valleys and 40s in the mountains. Lows tonight in the 20s mountains and 30s valleys and again Wednesday night. GK .LONG TERM...Thursday through Tuesday. Widespread rain and snow is expected for most of Thursday, before clearing out a bit from west east Thursday night. Snow levels will be falling as a cold front arrives, but do expect them to peak at 6000-7000ft out ahead of it. It will be breezy but with warmer temperatures, blowing and drifting snow will be mitigated a bit. Southerly winds will create some downslope from Burley to Driggs, but will create opposite from the Wood River Valley through Island Park on that side of the Snake Plain. Current trends keep most of the accumulating snow above 6500ft, with light accumulations below that. At the moment, the end of widespread precipitation will occur before snow levels fully crash later Thursday. The latest forecast has 12" or more likely for the Lost River Range, as well as portions of the White Knob, Boulder, Pioneer and Sawtooth Mountains. Same can be said from Monida Pass to Sawtell Peak. The chance of more than 16" is between 20-40% depending on location. Across the Bear River Range, there is only a 10-20% chance of more than a foot. Showers will linger Friday as the actual splitting storm crosses the state. Another round of moisture is poised to hit eastern Idaho over the weekend, especially Sunday and into Monday. This round looks to hit the Sawtooths/surrounding ranges, eastern highlands, and Bear River Range hardest. There is a 40-50% chance of more than 1" of moisture (rain/melted snow) for the Big Holes/Tetons and the Bear River Range. There is a 25-45% chance of exceeding 1.5" for the Sawtooths. More precipitation is expected Monday and Tuesday. It definitely looks like a wetter and cooler pattern heading our way. Keyes $$ .AVIATION...12Z Tuesday through 18z Wednesday. We are expecting VFR weather through most of the period. Clouds will be increasing Wednesday morning with a chance of rain or snow arriving at SUN during that timeframe.
