...STRAIGHT-LINE WIND DAMAGE IN SOMERSET AND MIDDLESEX COUNTIES...

A severe thunderstorm moved through Somerset and Middlesex counties
in New Jersey during the evening of July 3, 2025. The storm brought
widespread tree damage across the towns of North Plainfield,
South Plainfield, Green Brook Township, Bound Brook, and Metuchen
in New Jersey. Unfortunately, the storm damage in North Plainfield
resulted in one fatality. Based on photos shared with the office
along with doppler radar imagery and additional observations, the
damage that occurred is consistent with straight-line winds and
downbursts. Wind speeds were estimated to range from 65 to 80 mph
based on data from the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar in Newark, NJ
(TEWR) and are consistent with various damage indicators.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly would like to thank our
emergency management partners, trained spotters, the local media,
and the general public for sharing reports during this event.
