...STRAIGHT-LINE WIND DAMAGE IN HUNTERDON, SOMERSET AND MIDDLESEX
COUNTIES...

A severe thunderstorm developed over northern Hunterdon County
and intensified as it moved through Somerset and Middlesex
counties in New Jersey during the evening of July 3, 2025. The
storm brought widespread tree damage across many municipalities,
including but not limited to Far Hills, Bernards, North
Plainfield, Dunellen, Piscataway, South Plainfield, Green Brook
Township, Bound Brook, Edison, Woodbridge and Metuchen.
Unfortunately, the storm damage in North Plainfield resulted in
one fatality. Based on photos shared with the office along with
doppler radar imagery and additional observations, the damage that
occurred is consistent with straight-line winds and downbursts.
Wind speeds were estimated to range from 65 to 80 mph based on
data from the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar in Newark, NJ (TEWR)
and are consistent with various damage indicators.

This is the same storm which affected portions of adjacent Union
County, which is covered by our sister office in New York City,
New York. See their statement for some additional information.

The National Weather Service in Mount Holly would like to thank
our emergency management partners, trained spotters, the local
media, and the general public for sharing reports during this
event.
