Public Information Statement
National Weather Service Omaha/Valley
NE 525 PM CDT Sun Sep 1 2024

The climate this summer across eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa
was pretty average, not excessively hot or cool, and not excessively
dry or wet. In Omaha, it was just slightly cooler than average, and
drier than normal. And it was just slightly warmer than average at
both Lincoln and Norfolk, and slightly wetter than normal. Omaha
reached 100 or higher 3 times and Lincoln reached 100 or higher 6
times this summer, both climatologically average. Norfolk only
reached 100 or higher 1 time, which was 3 instances below average.

The generous rainfall earlier in the summer allowed most of the
region to get out of the severe to extreme drought by early July.
But drier conditions later in summer have allowed drought conditions
to redevelop across parts of the region through August.

It has also been a record setting year for the number of tornadoes
in our area.
