299 FXUS63 KMQT 301842 AFDMQT Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Marquette MI 242 PM EDT Wed Jul 30 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Cooler to near normal temperatures and dry weather is expected Wednesday through the rest of the week. Temperatures are expected to warm to normal to above normal by this weekend. && .SHORT TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/... Issued at 232 PM EDT Wed Jul 30 2025 As near-surface smoke continues to smother the area the rest of today through Thursday, expect the air quality to continue being Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (Orange AQI) to Unhealthy (Red AQI), with some spots such as Houghton and Munising already reporting Very Unhealthy (Purple AQI) air conditions. Thus, avoid strenuous activity the next couple of days as the high pressure building into the region will arrive over the western Great Lakes Thursday, continuing to pump smoke from the Canadian wildfires over us as it does so. Because of the air quality hazards associated with the smoke, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has re-issued an Air Quality Advisory for today through Thursday; read the Air Quality Advisory for additional details. Outside of the air quality/surface smoke concerns, the forecast remains quiet, with the high pressure building in suppressing convection across the region as cold air advection gradually continues across the U.P. until Thursday. Thus, we can expect the coolest temperatures of the week to occur today through Thursday, with highs today and Thursday ranging from the upper 60s to mid 70s; lows are still expected to drop down into the mid 40s across the interior areas tonight, even despite the added insulation from the near-surface smoke. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... Issued at 241 PM EDT Wed Jul 30 2025 Quiet and dry weather continues the rest of this week into early next week as the high pressure, now over the western Great Lakes by Thursday night and Friday, continues to keep ridging over the area through the weekend while finally escaping to the Eastern Seaboard on Sunday. Surface smoke looks to continue being a problem into Thursday night, and could continue being a problem until sometime this weekend; I wouldn`t be surprised if the air quality remains poor for the next few days. Otherwise, expect the temperatures to gradually increase to around normal to potentially above normal for this weekend into the first half of next week as some warmer air circulates around the high pressure over our neck-of-the-woods. While we could see RHs drop down into the mid 30 percents Friday and Saturday afternoons, with leaves being green and the slight surplus of rainfall we`ve received over the past month, no fire weather concerns are expected even as we remain dry until potentially the middle of next week; in addition, moisture from the Gulf is projected to begin advecting back into the area around Sunday next week as the high`s center leaves for the Eastern Seaboard, increasing surface moisture. && .AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z THURSDAY/... Issued at 1253 PM EDT Wed Jul 30 2025 Near sfc smoke is expected to keep everyone at IFR to MVFR vis over the next 24+ hours, although a bump-up to VFR from time-to-time cannot be ruled out. TAF amendments may be needed later this afternoon if vis stays more IFR than MVFR. Light northerly flow continues the rest of today through Thursday as high pressure continues to build in from the Canadian Prairies. && .MARINE... Issued at 241 PM EDT Wed Jul 30 2025 Light winds of 20 knots or less continues as high pressure ridging remains across Lake Superior. && .MQT WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Upper Michigan... None.
