- Hot temperatures continue through midweek with record heat
  possible this afternoon.

- The prolonged period of hot temperatures could result in heat
  related illnesses. Be sure to stay hydrated and take frequent
  breaks in air conditioning or the shade if possible.

- Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop over
  portions of the region Wednesday and Thursday.

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Tuesday night)

The upper-level high remains centered over west Texas and
southeast New Mexico this afternoon. Temperatures have already21
reached between 100-105 degrees over much of the Permian Basin,
Upper Trans Pecos, and southeast New Mexico Plains as of 2 PM
CDT, and may warm a few more degrees through peak heating. We have
reached 102 degrees at Midland Int`l as of 230 PM CDT, which is 1
degree shy of the daily record of 103 set in 1936, so there is a
good chance we will at least tie, if not break the record by late
this afternoon.

The upper-ridge will remain firmly planted over our forecast area
through Tuesday afternoon before a slight westward shift may
occur by Tuesday night. Temperatures may trend 1-2 degrees
lower on Tuesday, but we still expect another day of high
temperature readings above 100 degrees over much of the forecast
area. Another Heat Advisory has been posted for the northeastern
Permian Basin as well as along the Pecos River Valley in Eddy
County New Mexico, where afternoon highs will reach up to 105-108
degrees.

.LONG TERM...
(Wednesday through Sunday)

The upper-level ridge will continue to shift westward over the
Desert Southwest into Wednesday. Isolated to scattered showers and
thunderstorms developing over the higher terrain of New Mexico may
move into the southeast New Mexico Plains and the Permian Basin
Wednesday evening into late Wednesday night within the
northwesterly flow aloft. Isolated to scattered showers and
thunderstorms may develop over the region again along the eastern
fringe of the upper ridge on Thursday. The ridge will build back
to the east Friday through the weekend, so expect a return to
mostly dry conditions except for a few thunderstorm in the higher
terrain areas of our western CWA on Friday. Temperatures remain
hot through the weekend, but may only range in the upper 90s to
around 103 degrees for most Friday through Sunday.
