.DISCUSSION...
Strong southwest winds will develop by late morning with a return of
unseasonably warm temperatures resulting in elevated to near
critical fire weather conditions this afternoon across most of the
Caprock. Sustained southwest winds will generally remain between 15
and 30 mph this afternoon west of I-27, with minimum RH values
expected to fall into the single digits. Despite ERC values still
not being overly high, rapid drying of fine fuels is likely given
the warm and very dry airmass this afternoon, especially near the
TX/NM state line. A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 AM until 7
PM for the far southwestern TX Panhandle and the western South
Plains, with a Rangeland Fire Danger Statement in effect from noon
until 7 PM for the I-27 corridor. Farther east, cooler and more
humid conditions will keep fire weather concerns low off the Caprock
today.
Elevated to near-critical fire conditions are expected across the
far southwest Panhandle and western South Plains Thursday and
Friday afternoon due to anomalously warm temperatures and dry
fuels. Wind speeds will be the limiting factor as they are
forecast to remain light through the period and curtail the
potential for rapid fire spread.
A pattern more supportive of a critical fire threat may develop
across the forecast area on Saturday, with very warm and dry
westerly, pre-frontal flow spreading east into the Rolling
Plains. Wind speeds are also expected to be somewhat higher
Saturday, although still on the lower end of patterns meeting Red
Flag conditions. Lastly, there will be a cold front approaching
from the north. This front will bring an abrupt wind shift and
could adversely affect any fire activity.
