Winds will gradually veer generally out of the south today
areawide, first in central and southern Missouri later this
morning and further east by early afternoon. With warmer air
aloft beginning to build today, mixing heights will be stunted by
a strong inversion and low-level instability, while sufficient to
disperse smoke, will not be very strong. Mixing heights will
climb above 1700ft by noon or so, perhaps a tad sooner depending
on local effects, but with weak transport winds, expect poor
ventilation rates. Minimum RH values will drop into the mid-30s
to upper 20s, with the lower values near west-central Illinois
where mixing will be strongest and deepest. Wind speeds were
adjusted higher slightly areawide, but remain just below elevated
fire danger criteria. Still, keep an eye out for locally-erratic
gusts during the afternoon.
RH values creep up Friday and Saturday with a stronger southerly
wind advecting more moisture into the region, despite the warmer
temperatures (mid-70s). Wind speeds will be strongest on Saturday
ahead of a cold front that will send temperatures 15 or so
degrees cooler Sunday. Much drier air also accompanies this
front, and if cool air lags behind the dry air (as shown in some
model output), we may realize more widespread elevated fire
danger Sunday. I`d put this probability around 30-40% at the
moment, and will be closely monitored. Rain chances increase
Monday onward, with wetting rains looking likely Monday into
Tuesday.
