Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1232 PM PST Fri Nov 22 2024

...ELEVATED TO BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS TODAY AWAY
FROM THE COAST DUE TO LOCALLY GUSTY ONSHORE WINDS AND SINGLE
DIGIT HUMIDITIES...

...WIDESPREAD WETTING RAINS LIKELY WITH SIGNIFICANT COOLING AND
MOISTENING TONIGHT THROUGH AT LEAST WEDNESDAY...

.DISCUSSION...
An extremely dry air mass has moved into southwest California,
focused over the mountains, foothills, and many valleys, where many
stations are continuing to report humidities in the 5 to 10 percent
range. Meanwhile, onshore wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph will be common over
the mountains and foothills this afternoon and evening. Due to the very
dry air, widespread elevated fire weather conditions are expected today
away from the coast, with brief critical conditions over the
windier mountains and foothills.

A significant pattern change will commence tonight and persist through
Wednesday, with a few impluses bringing threats of rain at times to the region.
Confidence is high in widespread rain over the region, and that impacts will
be minimal through at least Sunday. Confidence on the details for Monday
through Wednesday however remains low. The most likely outcome is for
widespread light to moderate rain with impacts focused on the roads. However,
there is a 20 percent chance of more impactful heavier rainfall for San Luis
Obispo County Monday into Monday night. The preliminary rainfall estimates for
tonight through Wednesday are generally expected to range between 1.50 to
2.50 inches across much of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, with
locally higher amounts likely in the Santa Lucias. For Ventura and LA
counties, rainfall amounts are generally expected to range betwen 0.33 and
1.50 inches (highest in western Ventura County). The chance for rain over
Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday is lowering, with some model solutions
showing the potential for some offshore winds and lowering humidity to develop
on Thanksgiving.
