Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
926 AM PDT Tue Sep 16 2025

...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS DUE TO VERY WARM CONDITIONS AND A
RISK OF DEEP PLUME DOMINATED FIRES THROUGH WEDNESDAY...

...TROPICAL MOISTURE IMPACTING THE AREA WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY WITH
RISKS FOR DRY LIGHTING AND LOCALLY STRONG WINDS EARLY, TRANSITIONING TO
MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING THREAT...

.DISCUSSION...
Temperatures will peak today and Wednesday, with highs between 92 and
102 common inland of the beaches. This will create mixing heights
between 10,000 and 14,000 feet over the mountains and interior leading
to an elevated risk of plume dominated fire behavior.

Tropical Storm Mario, currently centered 800 miles south of Point
Conception, will continue to move towards southwest California. While
the storm will weaken quickly over the next 24 hours, very deep tropical
moisture will push over California Wednesday through Friday. While it
is not clear if we will see thunderstorms, and the risk is NOT high
enough to warrant a Fire Weather Watch, there is still a chance. With
dry air near the surface through early Thursday, any thunderstorm
carries a risk of dry lightning fire starts and locally strong winds. As
we get deeper into Thursday, fairly widespread rain is likely, with a
risk of localized pockets of heavier showers. Any heavy shower could
produce isolated flash flooding or debris flow. As the core of system
approaches, abrupt and erratic wind shifts are likely with gusts of 30
to 40 mph possible anywhere, but especially in the mountains and
especially Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. The tropical moisture and
asssociated risks should decrease Friday into Saturday, but there is
now a growing chance of a repeat tropical surge sometime Sunday through
Tuesday of next week.
