...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS WITH INCREASED RISK FOR LARGE PLUME DOMINATED FIRES
TODAY INTO WEDNESDAY ACROSS INTERIOR VALLEYS, MOUNTAINS, AND DESERTS...
...THREAT OF MONSOONAL THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH WEDNESDAY WITH HIGHEST RISK OVER THE MOUNTAINS
AND EASTERN ANTELOPE VALLEY...
...SMALL RISK OF ISOLATED DRY LIGHTNING STRIKES FOR SAN LUIS OBISPO AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES
TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY...
.DISCUSSION...
Elevated fire weather conditions will continue today into Wednesday across interior valleys,
mountains, and deserts due to hot, dry, and breezy conditions. Deep mixing heights and the influx
of monsoonal moisture/instability will lead to an increased risk for plume dominated fire
behavior today and Tuesday. Mixing heights will continue to range between
10,000 and 16,000 feet across the interior today and Tuesday. There is a 10 to 15 percent
chance of monsoonal thunderstorms this afternoon across the northern Ventura county
mountains and eastern San Gabriels/eastern Antelope Valley. Any storms
today will bring the potential for isolated dry lightning strikes and strong/erratic
outflow wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph. From tuesday into Wednesday, the monsoonal
moisture and instability are somewhat enhanced, leading to a 30-50 percent chance of
thunderstorms across the Ventura County/Santa Barbara county interior mountains and
eastern San Gabriels extending into eastern Antelope Valley. The storms in these areas
on Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be wetter, with the potential for localized flooding.
Enhanced upper level instability will also bring a 5-15 percent chance of thunderstorms with
isolated dry lightning risk across the remaining portions of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara,
and Ventura counties on Tuesday, then mainly confined to the Central Coast on Wednesday
into Wednesday night.
Humidites over the far interior will commonly be in the 12 to 25 percent
range with fairly typical onshore winds of 10 to 25 mph with
gusts up to 20 to 35 mph in windiest areas over the interior. While humidities
will be slightly higher by Wednesday, there will be increasing and more widespread
onshore winds across the interwar maintaining the elevated fire weather threat.
During this time, wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph will be likely across the interior,
strongest in the Antelope Valley and adjacent foothills. An upper level low pressure
system off the coast could pull in some subtropical moisture into the region sometime
between Thursday and Saturday, with a 5-10 percent chance of showers and elevated
thunderstorms. If any thunderstorms were to develop, the main risk would be isolated
dry lightning strikes.
