OPEN LAKE FORECAST for Lake Michigan
National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI
902 AM CDT Wed Mar 12 2025

FOR WATERS BEYOND FIVE NAUTICAL MILES OF SHORE ON Lake Michigan.

Waves are provided as a range of significant wave heights, which
is the average of the highest 1/3 of the wave, along with the
average height of the highest 10% of the waves which will
occasionally be encountered.

.SYNOPSIS...

30.1 inch high pressure will linger over Quebec today, helping to
maintain east-northeast winds across Lake Michigan. Said high
will progress into the Saint Lawrence Valley tonight as a weak
area of 29.7 inch low pressure concurrently moves toward the
southern Hudson Bay. Light southeasterly winds will thus become
established over the northern half of the open waters this
evening, with easterly winds persisting further south. A broad
area of 29.2 inch low pressure will migrate into the northern
Rocky Mountains on Thursday, allowing southeasterly breezes to
become established across the entirety of Lake Michigan.

A strong area of low pressure near 28.9 inches will form in the
central Great Plains on Friday, quickly progressing into the upper
Mississippi Valley by dawn Saturday. Gusty southeast winds will
develop ahead of the approaching low by Friday evening, when
widespread gusts between 25-30 knots are expected across all of
the open waters. These gusts will continue into the first half of
Saturday evening as the low pressure center moves from northern
Wisconsin to Ontario. Thunderstorms will accompany the approaching
low late Friday night, with rain showers continuing into Saturday.
Severe weather is not expected at this time. Gusts between 30-35+
knots are possible Saturday morning and afternoon, particularly
over the southern half of Lake Michigan. Trends will be monitored
for potential Gale Watches or Warnings in the coming forecasts.
Winds will shift out of the west- northwest Sunday morning as a
front crosses the open waters. 20-25 knot gusts will continue into
Sunday afternoon, gradually tapering Sunday night.
