Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
200 AM PDT Fri Apr 18 2025

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will build across the Great Basin
through Saturday as a departing low moves further eastward into
the Rockies. A few scattered showers towards the Utah border
through the early afternoon before drier conditions return. The
next cold front is set to arrive Sunday, though mostly devoid of
precipitation. Gradually warming temperatures with quiet weather
through the beginning of next week.

.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night

A shortwave trough and attendant surface low centered across Utah
will slowly pull off to the east through the day today. High
pressure will build across the region into Saturday with highs
rebounding from another day below normal today in the 40s over
northeastern Nevada and low 50s further to the west-central
portions of the state to near normal on Saturday.

Watching a few snow showers working their way southward across
Elko and Eureka Counties early this morning, so watch for a quick
burst of snow in Elko before sunrise with brief visibility
reduction and a quick coating of snow, which should melt given
antecedently warm conditions the past few days. Hi-res guidance
has not been handling exact placement of these snow showers very
well but overall consensus among the HREF members is for gradual
reduction in shower activity into the afternoon as the low moves
further to our east. Best chance for accumulations will be across
the Ruby, Jarbidge, and Snake Mountains with a 30% chance for an
inch or more of snow at Pequop Summit and a 50% chance for an inch
or more of snow at Sacramento Pass through 11 pm this evening.

Winds will also increase once again late this morning into this
afternoon as stronger winds aloft mix to the surface. With less
instability and weaker mid-level winds than yesterday, confidence
in advisory-level wind gusts is lower today. Will need to monitor
eastern Elko County once again with a 40% chance for max wind
gusts of at least 45 mph through this evening.

Any lingering showers will subside tonight with warmer and drier
conditions heading into Saturday as highs return closer to normal
in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through next Thursday.

Trough energy dropping through the Pacific NW will clip
Northeastern NV Sunday evening into early Monday bringing a 20%
chance of rain to valley areas over and near Elko County, with a
30% chance of light snowfall to the mountains. Monday afternoon
the clipping trough lifts to the northeast up into ID and MT with
dry conditions across northern and central NV through Tuesday
night. A second weak system will bring another round of light
shower activity to northern NV Wednesday, again with light valley
rain and high elevation snow showers mainly over portions of Elko
County. Reinforcing trough energy Thursday is projected to dig
down through CA and into NV bringing more light showers to mainly
northern NV, though a few showers may reach into central NV.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions forecast to be the primary flight conditions at
all terminal sites through Saturday. Watching a few brief snow
showers through 12Z with moderate confidence for VSBY and CIG
restrictions at KEKO. Breezy to strong NW winds will continue
through Friday evening as upper trough over Utah drifts east.
Winds will be strongest across the eastern half of the state with
KELY, KEKO, KBAM, and KTPH seeing NW winds of 10 KT to 25 KT with
gusts up to 35 KT. KWMC wind will be lighter with NW winds of 10
KT to 20 KT with gusts up to 25 KT. Ceilings will be higher for
western Nevada at FEW to SCT at 10kFT, for eastern NV ceilings
will be SCT to BKN at 5kFT to 10 kFT. VCSH to -SHRA through 15Z
for KELY however chances will be low at 20%.
