Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
1251 PM PDT Thu Sep 19 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Look for light, isolated to scattered rain showers
and isolated thunderstorms in the area through Friday. A period of
dry weather begins Saturday with warmer temperatures by early
next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday night. Skies are partly to
mostly cloudy across central Nevada this afternoon, with partly
sunny skies across far northern Nevada. The clouds are associated
with a closed upper low that is currently spinning across
southwestern California at this time. For today, limited
instability and moisture will help to produce and continue
isolated to scattered showers with one or two rumbles of thunder
possible. Best chances continue to remain over central Nevada,
though sprinkles across northern Nevada are possible. Rainfall
amounts will be light with less than 0.05 inches expected. Look
for lows in the upper 30s to mid 40s for the overnight.

For Friday and Friday night, the upper low will shift slowly to
the east, crossing southern California and Arizona during this
time. Isolated showers are expected to be limited across and south
of the US Highway 50 corridor. Further north, clouds will be few
with skies mostly sunny. Winds will remain light through the day.
Highs will be in the 70s. Look for the light precipitation to end
with clouds scattering out during the overnight. Dry conditions
will remain with lows in the 30s and 40s.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next Thursday.

Dry weather along with light west to northwest winds expected
this weekend. Highs will be in the upper 60s to mid 70s with lows
in the mid 30s to lower 40s under partly cloudy to mostly clear
skies. By early to mid next week, a ridge of high pressure builds
over the western U.S. Highs will warm into the upper 70s to lower
80s with lows in the 40s. The ridge axis will push eastward by
Thursday in response to a low pressure system moving into the west
coast. Warm and dry weather will persist over the region into
late next week.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions and light winds below 10 kts are
expected at all terminals. A low pressure system moving
southeastward into CA/AZ will bring VCSH to KELY and northern
terminal sites this afternoon. Showers expected to diminish this
evening. VFR conditions and light north to northwest winds around
10 kts expected Friday afternoon and evening.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...Isolated to scattered showers will continue this
afternoon and evening with the best chances for light
precipitation across central Nevada. More sun than clouds will
remain over the northern portions. This is due to an upper level
low pressure system that is currently off the southwestern
California coast. The weather system is expected to track to the
east across southern California and Arizona through roughly
Friday and early Saturday. Moisture will remain limited with
isolated shower activity on Friday remaining along and south of
the US Highway 50 corridor. Further north, skies will be mostly
sunny. The light shower activity will dissipate with all areas
seeing mostly sunny skies on Saturday and Sunday. High
temperatures will continue their slow rise with readings in the
70s and 80s.
