National Weather Service Elko NV
1223 PM PST Sat Feb 22 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Increasing clouds expected tonight across northern
Nevada with light showers from the I-80 corridor north to the
Idaho border. Mostly clear and quiet expected for central Nevada.
Plenty of sunshine across central Nevada tomorrow afternoon may
lead to a few near record high temperatures. Look for above
normal temperatures for the area through the upcoming week with
readings in the 50s and 60s and lows in the 20s and 30s.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Sunday night. Skies are mostly sunny
over much of northern and central Nevada this afternoon, save for
a small stretch along the northern border with Idaho. Current
synoptic situation depicts a high pressure system over the
southwestern United States. By tonight, a strong upper jet will
impinge upon the ridge and suppress it southward. Moisture will be
pushed east into northern Nevada during the overnight. The trend
over the last several days has been to extend southward the area
of light precipitation. Though snow levels will start out this
evening at around 5500 feet, they will steadily rise overnight. In
addition, clouds will be on the increase with light isolated to
scattered showers extending further south, with activity reaching
I-80. Central Nevada is expected to remain on the dry side.
Overnight lows will be in the 20s and 30s.

By Sunday and Sunday night, models indicate isolated to scattered
showers will continue across northern Nevada. Winds will also
develop out of the southwest with gusts to 25 mph, especially over
northern Nevada and the higher terrain in the central parts. Snow
levels will continue rising and will be at or above 8000 feet by
Sunday evening. Highs in the afternoon will be in the 50s to mid
60s. Near record high temperatures are possible in portions of
central Nevada tomorrow afternoon. Here are some probabilities of
high temperatures greater than 55 degrees for select locations
across northern and central Nevada for Sunday afternoon:

Austin - 65%
Battle Mountain - 90%
Carlin - 25%
Elko - 10%
Ely - 100%
Eureka - 75%
Jackpot - 0%
Jarbidge - 0%
Owyhee - 0%
Ruth - 60%
Spring Creek - 10%
Tonopah - 98%
Wells - 2%
West Wendover 15%
Wildhorse Res - 0%
Winnemucca - 90%

Look for light rain showers to continue during the evening hours
across far northern Nevada. Snow levels will remain high at or
above 7500 feet. Overnight lows will be in the 30s to near 40
degrees. Winds are expected to remain light.

.LONG TERM...Monday through next Friday

Temperatures 10-15 degrees above normal expected this week as
zonal and ridged flow cover the area through Thursday.
Temperatures this high will be near record, but no broken records
are currently forecast. Thursday into Friday a cut-off low passes
just south of the forecast area. No precipitation is expected from
this system, but an upper level trough is already approaching from
the Pacific. While not expected to reach the forecast area until
Sunday, precipitation currently looks to begin with rain on
Saturday.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR conditions expected through the next 24 hours. A
chance of showers exists Sunday for KEKO, KBAM and KWMC but
confidence is currently too low for TAF inclusion at KEKO and
KBAM. Any showers that do occur could cause below VFR visibility
and ceilings but are expected to be short-lived. Intermittent
gusts up to twenty knots are also possible at KEKO, KBAM and KWMC.
