058 FXUS65 KLKN 072002 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 102 PM PDT Mon Apr 7 2025 .SYNOPSIS...A weak system will briefly touch the extreme northern sections of the forecast area this evening, which may produce an isolated shower with little to no accumulation expected. Otherwise, temperatures will continue to trend higher as the work week progresses as high pressure builds over the Great Basin. This will result in high temperatures climbing into record or near record temperatures with many temperature records in jeopardy. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday night. Pacific trough energy has moved east and is bringing with it clouds and very light showers. These showers are isolated in nature and are north of I-80. There are mid to high level clouds with peaks of sun across the area this afternoon. Winds have picked up in Winnemucca and Battle Mountain but are light elsewhere. Look for any isolated shower activity to remain in the north. Overnight lows will be in the 30s and 40s. All models have been showing heights rising across the Great Basin Tuesday and Tuesday night. This will result in partly to mostly sunny skies during the day tomorrow. Highs will be a few degrees cooler than Monday but will still remain above normal levels with readings in the 60s to mid 70s. Winds are expected to be breezy out of the west 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. No precipitation is expected. Mostly clear and quiet conditions will continue into the overnight with lows in the 30s and 40s. .LONG TERM...Wednesday through next Monday. A gradual warming trend is expected to persist through Friday as high pressure strengthens over the western U.S. Highs will reach into the upper 70s with overnight lows in the 40s. Afternoon highs across northern and central Nevada will reach around twenty degrees above normal for both Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon. Heading into the weekend, a Pacific Northwest trough advances eastward, bringing increased southwest-west winds to 10-15 mph, with gusts of 20-25 mph. Cooler temperatures expected on Sunday, with highs lowering into the upper 50s to lower 60s with overnight lows in the 30s. Additionally, a rain and snow mix ahead of the attendant cold front will move into northern Nevada. Periods of light snow are expected in the mountains of Northern Elko County and the Ruby Mountains Saturday morning into Sunday afternoon, with snowfall tapering off Sunday evening. Starting Monday, uncertainty emerges as cluster analysis and probabilistic ensemble guidance diverge, with some models indicating a Pacific Northwest trough advancing eastward, while others suggest a persistent ridge over the forecast area. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions expected at all terminals over the next 24 hours. Scattered to broken clouds with ceilings ranging from FL100 to FL250 will persist across northern and central NV. Winds will generally be from the southwest at 10-15 kts, with gusts up to 25 kts. Gusty winds are expected to subside around 02Z Tue. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories... None. && $$ 86/90/90
