Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
300 AM PDT Sun Apr 20 2025

.SYNOPSIS...A weak disturbance and cold front will bring a chance
of light rain showers and thunderstorms to northern Nevada today.
Gradually warmer temperatures and quiet weather are anticipated
through the beginning of next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Monday night

Current satellite imagery shows mostly clear skies under
northwest flow. A shortwave embedded within the southern extent of
a Pacific Northwest trough will bring a 40-60% chance of light
valley rain and mountain snow to northern Nevada. Increased
instability (150-250 J/kg) ahead of an approaching cold front will
bring isolated to scattered thunderstorms across northern
Humboldt and northern Elko counties this afternoon and evening.
The primary threats with any thunderstorm development include
gusty outflow winds up to 45 mph and dangerous cloud-to-ground
lightning strikes.

Elsewhere, dry conditions are expected under zonal flow aloft,
with high temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Southwest to west
winds of 10 to 15 mph will lead breezy conditions, with gusts up
to 30 mph. Any lingering showers will taper off tonight, giving
away to mostly clear skies and overnight lows ranging from the 30s
to 40s.

A warming trend is expected to persist through the beginning of
next week. Highs will reach into the upper 70s with overnight lows
in the 40s. Afternoon highs across northern and central Nevada
will reach around ten degrees above normal for this time of year.
Winds will be out of the west-northwest at 10-15 mph during the
day.

&&

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday

Zonal flow aloft is expected Tuesday. Tuesday should be the
warmest day of the extended forecast. High temperatures throughout
Northern and Central Nevada Tuesday afternoon will be around ten
degrees above normal for this time of year. Here are probabilities
of maximum temperatures of 70 degrees or higher for locations in
Northern and Central Nevada on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2025:

Eureka - 96%
Ely - 95%
Lund - 95%
Crescent Valley - 95%
Battle Mountain - 90%
Tonopah - 90%
Carlin - 85%
Elko - 80%
McGill - 80%
Winnemucca - 70%

A feeble trough of low pressure will move eastward across Northern
California Wednesday. This trough of low pressure will weaken as
it passes eastward through Northern Nevada Thursday. The trough of
low pressure will be responsible for no more than a slight chance
of rain in Eastern Nevada Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening.

An Eastern Pacific trough of low pressure will approach the west
coast of the United States Friday. Strong, gusty south to
southwest winds near 40 mph are possible Friday afternoon into
Friday evening ahead of this atmospheric disturbance. Travel may
be difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles. Blowing dust
could reduce visibilities at times.

Forecast uncertainty increases next weekend. Timing and strength
of the incoming atmospheric impulse remain questionable at this
time. A cooling trend is expected next weekend. By next Sunday
afternoon, high temperatures will be near seasonal values.

&&

.AVIATION...A cold front is expected to move across northern NV
Sunday afternoon, bringing a 15-30% chance of light rain showers
and isolated thunderstorms near the northern terminal sites and
north of the I-80 corridor between 21Z Sun to 06Z Monday.

Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected at all terminals through
Sunday evening. Increasing cloudiness is forecasted through the
day on Sunday but CIGs will remain above 3000FT through the
evening. Sunday afternoon wind gusts and all terminals are
anticipated to range between 20-25KT but will diminish after
sunset.
