Ice coverage in the American waters of lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron remains below normal for this time of year, but ice coverage on Lake Erie is well above normal at around 95 percent. Fast ice is present along the immediate lakeshore of Lake Erie with significant breaks in ice along the Michigan lakeshore and between roughly the Islands and Vermilion, OH. Ice is present along the lakeshore of Lake Huron with the highest concentrations from roughly Thunder Bay south to the St. Clair River. Fast ice is present over Saginaw Bay. Ice is present in the nearshore waters of Lake Michigan, although the open waters remain ice- free. Fast ice is present on Green Bay and the northern tip of Lake Michigan in addition to the Straits of Mackinac. Ice coverage on Lake Superior is largely confined to waters along the lakeshore, although fast ice is present around the Apostle Islands and in Chequamegon Bay and Whitefish Bay. Overall ice coverage for the Great Lakes (including Lake Ontario) is currently about 38 percent. Temperatures will remain below freezing across the majority of the Great Lakes through Friday with temperatures beginning to warm over the weekend. As a result, slow to moderate ice growth will likely continue before starting to slow as temperatures begin to warm over the weekend. Winds will generally be 25 knots or less through Friday night so the risk of significant shifts in ice remains low.
