5 Day Ice Discussion...

Ice coverage across the Great Lakes has increased to 23% and will be
trending with slower growth across the region. Lake Erie still
remains mostly ice covered, with small portions of the eastern basin
free of ice. For the rest of the lakes, they remain mostly ice free
outside of bays and inlets where there is fast ice. For Lake
Superior, the southern shoreline has ice coverage, with the highest
coverage west of Keweenaw Peninsula. Whitefish Bay remains partially
ice covered with areas along the southwestern shoreline and the St.
Mary`s River being ice covered. Lake Michigan has ice coverage
across the southeastern and east portion of the shoreline along with
the the southern half of Green Bay being fast ice. Lake Huron has a
more extensive ice coverage on its shoreline, covering the whole
western shoreline to include the Saginaw Bay being fast ice. For the
Straits of Mackinac, much of the western portion has become fast ice
with the eastern side on Lake Huron starting to break up.

For the next five days, ice growth will be slow due to the warmer
temperatures across the region. The northern portion of the lakes
will have a better chance of ice growth with temperatures down in
the 20s. Temperatures across the southern half will be approaching
40 during the day which will slow ice growth in some areas. Winds
will be lighter around 10-20 knots and southerly over the next few
days. This persistent southerly wind will push ice off of the
southern shore of each of the lakes through the end of the week.
