Lake Erie remains mostly ice covered, though there is a lack of fast ice with much of the ice lose and shifting around with the wind. The rest of the Great Lakes generally have limited amounts of ice in the open waters with greater coverage of ice in the nearshore waters and in bays...this includes Whitefish Bay on Lake Superior, Green Bay on Lake Michigan, the Straits of Mackinac, and Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron. Low pressure will pass north of the Great Lakes Thursday and Thursday night. This will bring strong west winds shifting northwest Thursday through Friday. A Gale Warning is in effect for much of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron for this time period. These winds will cause ice to shift east on Lake Erie through Friday. On the other lakes, shore ice may break off from the western shorelines and drift east with those strong winds. A Heavy Freezing Spray Warning is in effect for Lake Superior as well. Lake Erie, southern Lake Michigan and southern Lake Huron will see milder, above freezing temperatures Thursday. Otherwise, temperatures will fall back below freezing Friday through early next week across the southern Great Lakes, favoring slow to moderate ice growth. The northern Great Lakes will generally experience temperatures ranging from the single digits to 20s over the next several days, favoring moderate ice growth.
