Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Western
and North Central for Nebraska
National Weather Service North Platte NE
421 AM CDT Sat Oct 4 2025

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON CDT /11 AM MDT/ TODAY TO
10 PM CDT /9 PM MDT/ THIS EVENING...

.DISCUSSION...

Critical fire weather conditions are likely across much of western
Nebraska, largely due to very strong southerly wind gusts.

Gusty winds are already occurring early Saturday morning and
expectation is for these to continue through daybreak before
quickly increasing by mid-morning. Gusts will quickly exceed 30
mph ahead of a cool front settling south out of southwest South
Dakota with peak speeds this afternoon likely climbing up to 45
mph. These stronger winds will drive deep mixing of the boundary
layer which will again push daytime highs into the upper 80s to
lower 90s with dew points falling into the upper 30s to lower 40s.
This drier air will reside between two separate pools of richer
boundary layer moisture...the first being east in an area of
strong low-level moisture advection and the second being northwest
within a Pacific airmass behind the front. Afternoon humidity
minimums may fail to fully reach critical levels, however, they
should fall to within 10 percent of critical levels for most and
combined with the expected magnitude of winds will support the Red
Flag Warning issuance.

High cloud cover may be more prevalent across our northwest zones
nearer the cool front. This along with the Pacific airmass will
support cooler temperatures in these areas invof the Pine Ridge
and lesser fire weather concerns. Eventually this afternoon,
convection across the higher terrain will shift northeast and
propel the frontal boundary south and east. This will effectively
merge with the richer moisture to the east and allow humidities to
recover quickly. The Red Flag Warnings extending into the evening
are largely to encompass the wind shift coming with the frontal
boundary but humidity recovery will be good if not great for all
tonight with decreasing winds after midnight. Rain and
thunderstorm chances also increase through the evening and
portions of Zone 204 and western 208 may see wetting rains but
potential remains low elsewhere.

Fire weather concerns will then be low for much of next week as
temperatures fall to well below normal values and only slowly
moderate through the middle of the week. This will likely keep
humidity values well above critical levels with limited wind
potential as well.
