Invest 98W has intensified into Tropical Depression (TD) 12W to the west of Guam. TD 12W will make a turn to the north northwest today, likely passing to the west of the CNMI through Saturday. A strong southwest monsoon surge is expected to develop across the Marianas in its wake. Heavy rainfall and breezy to windy conditions are expected across the Marianas through Saturday with the passage TD 12W and the ensuing monsoon surge. Heavy rains will spread northward through today and tonight and will likely continue even as 12W later moves away from the islands due to the onset of a very wet southwest monsoon flow. Currently, 6 to 12 inches of rain is possible through Saturday night, and periods of very heavy rainfall may result in localized flooding. Additionally, the the risk of mudslides could increase with a prolonged multi-day heavy rain pattern. TD 12W will bring winds and seas hazardous to small craft. There is a potential for gale force gusts to develop beginning tonight as 12W lifts slowly north-northwest while strengthening. As this occurs, a southwesterly wind will strengthen, especially across the western waters of the CNMI. TD 12W will bring hazardous surf conditions across the Marianas. A high risk of rip currents along east facing reefs will shift to west and south facing reefs tonight into Friday and will likely continue through Saturday night. For more information on TD 12W, see bulletins issued by JTWC under WMO header WTPN33 PGTW.
