Weather Forecast Office (WFO) Goodland, Kansas
Subject: Changes to river forecast services for Beaver Creek at
Ludell, KS (LDLK1); Sappa Creek at Oberlin, KS (OBNK1); Prairie
Dog Creek 4E Clayton, KS (CLNK1); and South Fork Republican River
14SW St Francis, KS (SFAK1)
River Flood Forecast services will begin for the South Fork
Republican River 14SW St Francis, KS (SFAK1) and Prairie Dog Creek
4E Clayton, KS (CLNK1) effective August 1st. Both sites provide
automated river gauge information four times an hour via United
States Geological Survey (USGS) gauges and have been providing
data for more than 20 years. During high water events, this change
will allow the National Weather Service (NWS) to provide river
forecasts and flood warning services, to indicate when the crest
will occur and how high the river will rise.
Currently, the river gauges at Beaver Creek at Ludell, KS (LDLK1)
and Sappa Creek at Oberlin, KS (OBNK1) are river forecast sites,
but these locations are manual observation sites where no
observations have been received in many years. Due to the lack of
observation information, starting August 1 these locations will
change to data points, and forecast services will no longer be
available.
Areal or Flash Flood Watches or Warnings will not be impacted by
this change, and flood stages or impacts have not changed for any
of these sites.
The National Weather Service welcomes public feedback. For
additional information and for any questions/comments about these
changes, please contact:
